In a matter of days, our country will have a new president, and it will be history-making either way. We could have our first African American president, or our first female vice president. It seems that our world is changing rapidly.

This presidential race has been heated for many reasons-the current economic crisis, the differences between candidates’ views, the war in Iraq… the list could go on and on. But I think it is safe to say that about half of the country is going to be extremely disappointed and maybe even angry on Tuesday.

As Christians, what is our role in the political scene?

Well, it’s quite simple – God tells us to obey those put in authority over us, from the president  to our parents, unless they are directing us to disobey God’s law.

“Everyone must obey state authorities, because no authority exists without God's permission, and the existing authorities have been put there by God.” -Romans 13:1

Sometimes this is difficult for us to do, especially when we don’t respect the person put in authority over us or agree with their views. But as long as their directives are in line with God’s teachings, we are called to put our pride aside and follow their leadership.

Sometimes it seems like our parents or teachers are trying to take away our fun or are being unnecessarily hard on us. We look at our friends who have privileges and freedoms we don’t, and we think about how unfair it is. While parents and teachers are far from perfect, most are doing what they think is best for us, and in the end we will benefit from doing what they ask.

When life sees unfair and you don’t like the leadership God has put in your life, go to him with your frustrations. He is always willing to listen, and he understands. Nothing you have to say to him is out of line. He loves you unconditionally, with a perfect love that people on earth can’t achieve or even comprehend.
